Upon completing my academic journey, I made the decision to leave the world of academia behind. However, what no one prepared me for was the realization that academic training often doesn't align with the demands of the real world. I felt as disoriented as if I had been forced out of my home with nothing but a suitcase. I was uncertain of my next steps and how to navigate this new chapter of my life.
In desperation, I turned to my university's career services for guidance. After an hour filled with personality assessments, I anticipated receiving crucial insights that would illuminate my career path, helping me discover my passions and identity. I was searching for clarity about who I truly was.
While my expectations may have been lofty for something as abstract as a personality evaluation, hope is a powerful motivator, even in bleak moments.
The Unexpected Outcome
To my surprise, the results indicated that I possessed the ideal traits for thriving within a large corporate structure, gradually climbing the corporate ladder to attain success. The irony? The mere thought of a monotonous, secure corporate role triggered anxiety within me.
In reflecting on this revelation, I recognized a hidden desire for stability amidst my previous chaos. It all began to make sense.
What the Tests Overlooked
The depth of my disappointment was palpable; it felt as if my frustration could be felt across great distances. I still had no clearer understanding of my next career move. My academic background seemed to have let me down.
Upon further reflection, I realized that society often encourages us to fit neatly into predefined categories: the traditional corporate worker, the adventurous start-up enthusiast, or the free-spirited freelancer. However, my journey illuminated a more complex reality.
Despite specializing in a specific field during my PhD, I viewed myself as a generalist with diverse interests. While I excelled in various areas, I never achieved mastery in just one. I craved variety in my daily routine and the freedom to express my creativity across projects. Ultimately, I sought an existence that stood in stark contrast to the typical corporate role. In today's world, what value does a "safe" corporate job even hold?
The professional landscape is gradually evolving to accommodate creative generalists, but there is still a long way to go. Yet, all hope is not lost. I recognized that I had time to explore how to embrace my multifaceted identity.
A Shift in Perspective
My outlook improved when I discovered I wasn't alone in my quest for fulfillment. I became aware of a community of multipotentialites, or "multipods," who resonated with my experiences. Emily Wapnick defines this term as follows:
Multipotentialite: a person with diverse interests and creative endeavors.
In that moment, everything fell into place. I realized I had two options: search for that elusive perfect job (a quest that could take ages) or pursue a role I enjoyed while simultaneously crafting my ideal life outside of my 9-to-5.
With choices in front of me, the possibilities seemed limitless. The thought of creating something of my own had never crossed my mind before; I had a plethora of excuses ready. However, observing others who successfully balanced their work and personal lives while pursuing creative fulfillment opened a new pathway for me.
I then took the plunge into a job at a scale-up—a harmonious blend of corporate stability and start-up energy—and began sharing my thoughts and experiences online. It wasn’t grand or groundbreaking; it was simply my journey laid bare.
If you find yourself at an impasse or struggling to envision the possibilities ahead to achieve your ideal work-life balance, remember to trust in your creative inclinations. Dismiss the personality assessments that fail to recognize individuals like us. Instead, focus on nurturing your own projects.
Start with something small—a new hobby or side project. You may be laying the groundwork for a more significant leap in the future. But for now, pursue these endeavors for yourself, as if no one else is watching.
