The Role of Relapse in the Recovery Journey: A Different Perspective
Written on
Understanding Relapse in Recovery
In discussions surrounding addiction, the phrase "relapse is part of recovery" often surfaces. This sentiment, while common, raises concerns, particularly for those supporting loved ones on their recovery journey.
A clinician with three decades of experience in treating addiction, I have frequently encountered this expression. While it aims to cushion the impact of a relapse, I believe it can send a troubling message to those battling addiction. In a time when the opioid crisis is rampant and overdoses are a stark reality, suggesting that relapse is an expected outcome can be perilous.
The Importance of Mindset in Recovery
Is it beneficial for someone in recovery to think of relapse as a given? I would argue not. Recovery should be viewed as a series of conscious choices—feasible for everyone. It is not without its challenges; however, with determination, openness, and the commitment to prioritize recovery, individuals can maintain sobriety.
Many stories I've heard about relapse indicate that it often occurs when individuals step away from the support systems that fostered their success. It's crucial for those who experience a relapse to extract lessons from their setbacks to avoid repeating them. Rarely does someone unknowingly find themselves in a situation where they are forced to consume alcohol or drugs; these actions are deliberate choices. Thus, if we can choose to engage in harmful behaviors, we can also choose to abstain.
Staying Committed to Recovery
A steadfast commitment to recovery can lead to enduring sobriety. Invest wholeheartedly in your recovery journey, and the chances of maintaining it increase significantly.
