After school, Clarissa hurried to her room, eager to avoid her mother's probing questions about her distress. Her mom had an uncanny ability to read her emotions, and Clarissa felt the weight of her sadness too heavy to share, even with friends.

Once inside, she fell onto her bed, allowing her tears to flow freely. It felt as if she were spiraling into madness; nothing else could explain her turmoil.

“Why are you crying, girl?” a deep voice interrupted her thoughts.

Startled, Clarissa looked up, unable to comprehend the sudden presence. “W-what?” she stammered, trying to process the voice.

“Why are you crying?” the figure repeated.

It was Bydite, illuminated by a strange blue light that filled her room.

“Where did you come from? How did you get in?” she asked, bewildered.

“I’m the God of Technology. I can manifest wherever technology exists,” he explained, gesturing around her tech-filled room.

Clarissa was momentarily speechless, her mind racing.

“Now, let’s get back to your tears,” he said, his tone impatient. “What’s troubling you?”

“I thought I was losing my mind. I figured I had imagined the whole summoning,” she confessed, her thoughts racing. “But you’re here, so it must have been real. Why don’t Mira and Talia remember? Why are they not marked?” She pointed to her arm.

“They were too weak. They couldn't fulfill the debt, so I didn’t extend the offer to them. I erased all memory of that day,” he stated.

“Too weak?” she echoed, confused.

“Yes,” he affirmed succinctly.

Clarissa awaited further explanation, but when none came, she protested, “I don’t get it. They’re just as capable as I am.”

“You’re correct. You don’t understand,” he replied before vanishing without a trace. The room felt dimmer in his absence.

“That was strange,” she muttered to herself, lying back on her bed. She gazed at the black ceiling adorned with stars, a reminder of a past creative endeavor.

Reflecting on their conversation, she realized she couldn’t recall the specifics of her agreement with Bydite. She remembered what everyone had wished for but was lost on the cost.

Panic surged once more within her.
