Chapter 1: An Overview of 2022's Gaming Landscape
The year 2022 brought another exciting chapter in gaming, as developers continued to innovate and release captivating titles. With the industry still adapting to the post-pandemic environment, numerous games have piqued my interest. My gaming hours were largely dedicated to annual sports franchises, including EA’s NHL series and Sony’s MLB The Show. Additionally, I indulged in Rockstar's beloved open-world titles, Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto. Nonetheless, I ventured into several new games this year.
Here’s a look at my favorites.
High On Life
Developed by Squanch Games, this title is available on Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, and PC. It marks the latest effort from Justin Roiland, the mind behind Rick and Morty. Roiland's signature humor is prevalent, and he lends his voice to various characters, ensuring a lighthearted experience that never takes itself too seriously.
Gran Turismo 7
Produced by Sony Interactive, this racing game is accessible on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Growing up with Gran Turismo 3, I've enjoyed every installment in the series. Transitioning from PlayStation to Xbox, I was thrilled to find that my old PS4 could still play the game. While Gran Turismo Sport fell short of expectations, GT7, though not the pinnacle of the series (that honor goes to GT5), delivers a solid racing experience, with the exception of its online connectivity requirement for mostly offline career play.
Nintendo Switch Sports
This title, available on Nintendo Switch, serves as a much-anticipated sequel to Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. Although it lacks the same fanfare as its predecessors, it still captures the essence of family-friendly gaming, reminiscent of bowling or golfing with loved ones. The lighter controllers may lead to quicker fatigue, but once you adapt, Nintendo Switch Sports offers an enjoyable experience that evokes nostalgic memories.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
This reboot from Activision, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, stands out as the best Call of Duty game in years. Expanding on the free-to-play battle royale model, it revitalizes the original Modern Warfare series, with the first reboot released in 2019. If you're in search of a thrilling shooter, this game tops the list for the year.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Available on Nintendo Switch, this title represents another iconic exclusive from Nintendo. The game introduces new gameplay mechanics, including a "Mouthful Mode," and marks the series' first venture into 3D. Kirby remains a beloved character, and this installment breathes new life into the franchise.
Horizon Forbidden West
Also from Sony Interactive, this title is available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. As a sequel to one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games, Horizon Zero Dawn, it enhances the original's beautiful open world. With improvements in exploration and combat mechanics, Horizon Forbidden West is a worthy successor.
NHL 23
As an annual sports release from Electronic Arts, NHL 23 is currently the top contender in its genre. Every year, I try to engage with one sports title, and this year, it was this one. While I hope for improvements in the upcoming college football game, NHL 23 remains a solid experience. The landscape of sports gaming has its challenges, with EA’s Madden struggling, 2K’s NBA title plagued by microtransactions, and Sony’s MLB The Show offering a decent online experience but lacking significant offline updates. EA’s FIFA is satisfactory, but both FIFA and NHL are neck and neck at the moment.
